BOOK RECOMMENDATION: If you're looking for a motivating read that weaves hunting, philosophy, exercise, and health all into a compelling narrative, then THE COMFORT CRISIS by @Michael_Easter and featuring @followDVincent is the ticket.
H/t to @clyde_vetter & @vetter_marilyn for the book recommendation to me. I devoured this story in 3 days!
Exciting news from USDA! The same grasslands, shrublands, and rangelands that support habitat connectivity for migratory big game also provide essential habitat for upland birds and pollinators. Conservation works best when it works for both wildlife and landowners, and this new framework will strengthen voluntary conservation efforts on working lands across the West.
ATTN. Tennessee Folks! Be one of the FIRST Tennesseans to sport a Tennessee Quail Forever Specialty License Plate.
This specialty plate will not only showcase a bird we all know and love, but it will help to raise funds to continue our mission of conserving quail and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public access, education, and conservation advocacy across the great state of Tennessee!!

Pheasants Forever and @nature_org have protected 1,900 acres of native prairie, wetlands and restorable grassland in Clay County, near Fargo-Moorhead in northwestern Minnesota. A long-standing priority area for conservation partners, this acquisition strengthens a growing network of conserved prairie in the Red River Valley.
“Pheasants Forever is proud to support publicly accessible grassland projects benefiting multiple upland bird species in Minnesota’s western prairie range,” said Sabin Adams, Minnesota state coordinator for PF.

Sporting Dog Shorts Fueled by @ProPlan - Ticks Are Out Early: What Bird Dog Owners Need to Do Right Now
Ticks are out early this year, and for bird dog owners that matters. In many areas, a warmer, drier winter likely helped more ticks survive, so they are showing up sooner and in greater numbers than many hunters expect.
Early tick exposure is more than a nuisance. Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and anaplasmosis that can affect a dog's health, stamina, and ability to work. Because spring conditioning, summer training, and weekend tune-ups all put dogs in tick habitat, risk often starts long before hunting season.

We’re thrilled to join a great group of partners in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Forest Service! This agreement will expand access to land managed by USFS for outdoor recreation activities and hunting, providing more opportunities for upland hunters to chase wild birds.

Washington, D.C. can feel a long way from pheasant country, quail habitat, and working farms, but the decisions made there shape the future of upland hunting across America. In this conversation, the crew from Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever breaks down what happened during a recent D.C. fly-in alongside members of The Habitat Organization's new Upland Caucus.

The future of conservation depends on innovation, strong partnerships, and voluntary, incentive-based programs that work for producers and wildlife alike. Thank you to @USDA_NRCS for investing in working lands solutions that will benefit farmers, ranchers, and rural communities!
We partake in America's upland traditions because of their sacrifice. This Memorial Day, we pause to honor those who lost their lives in service to our country.
Today we pause to honor those who gave their lives in service to this great nation. We get to chase bird dogs from sea to shining sea because of their sacrifice. Thank you.
Pheasant Fact Friday!
Pheasants will nest in shelterbelts, but it's not ideal cover. Shelterbelts are the hen's next to last choice for nesting. A summary of 10 western states showed that only 3.5 percent of pheasant nests were in woody cover. If a high percentage of your hens are nesting in shelterbelts, it's probably because they can't find anywhere else to nest.
Pheasant are persistent, and will use any available habitat to breed and survive.
But if good grass cover is not available, they could concentrate nests in tree cover. Although they might not have the greatest nesting success among trees, the hen will still give it a try.
