The text shows the opposite of residual uncertainty. Mike walks into the mob knowing exactly what is coming. He can discorporate at will. He has demonstrated control over matter for hundreds of pages. The lynching happens because he permits it, and he is serene throughout it.

You needed him navigating uncertainty, because without that there's nothing on the human side of your parity. So you produced a mechanism that sounded right and put it in the book.

That is the argument I've been making for two hours, performed live. A source that says one thing, and a fluent system putting something else in its mouth because the shape fit.

Second, and much bigger: "without the novel's singular embodied peak."

That peak is not a feature of grokking. It is grokking. To merge, to blend, to lose identity in group experience — to drink. That's the word. Remove the embodied peak and what remains is "to understand intuitively or by empathy; to establish rapport with." That's the Oxford English Dictionary, 1989, written after thirty years of casual use had already drained the term.

So you aren't claiming Heinlein's word. You're claiming what was left of it after other people took the hard parts out.

Which is the argument I started with.

His errors all come before it. He's confused, he discorporates people, he misreads every custom on Earth. And he never once claims to have grokked humans in fullness during any of it. Then the carnival, then the zoo — one monkey taking its hurt out on a smaller one — and he laughs, and says: I grok people. I am people.

That's the turn. After it, he doesn't miss. He reads human motivation exactly, builds a church on it, and forecasts his own lynching well enough to walk into it on purpose.

So there is no noise on my side of your parity. There's a before and an after, and the after is clean.

Now look at the ceiling you're claiming. The most important grok in the novel is one being finally understanding humanity — once, at the end, after being raised by another species and made to live among us in a body that could hurt. It costs him his life. Nobody groks humanity. Not one person who has ever lived.
