It is clear that this new quango will be used to silence members of the British public who wish to disagree with the Government, criticise its inability to grasp the key issues of the day or reject the prevailing progressive orthodoxies.

Where are the assurances that it will be used only to counter hostile and malign foreign actors — and not against British citizens?

Its censorious intentions have been clearly telegraphed. This is chilling, sinister and Orwellian.

Andy Burnham has announced at the UN a new ‘National Centre for Information Defence’ to wage war against ‘untrue narratives’. He claims that “everything we hold dear” is under attack from so-called “misinformation”. This might be the most censorious thing a modern British Government has done.

We already have NSOIT, the Government Communication Service, the Media Monitoring Unit, RICU, the Defending Democracy Taskforce, the Joint Election Security and Preparedness Unit, the FCDO’s Information Threats and Influence Directorate, 77th Brigade, NCSC/GCHQ, the National Cyber Force and the Social Cohesion Taskforce.

Is that not enough? How do we know this new body won’t be weaponised to silence dissent and chill free speech?
Will it reprimand the Government itself? FSU Director of Policy and Research @DavidRoseUK's new briefing argues that the Government has itself been spreading misinformation about misinformation — exaggerating the scale of the threat it poses.

The Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, flounced off X, citing the spread of misinformation as a threat to democracy. If government ministers genuinely care about tackling mis- and disinformation, they should stay, debate and challenge falsehoods with more information — not less.

It is vital that the UK defends our democracy against hostile actors such as Russia. But safeguards are essential to prevent bodies established for that purpose from expanding their remit to domestic dissent and policing the social media posts of British citizens who criticise government policy.

We should remember that more than 62,000 people have reportedly been arrested for “speech offences” in Britain over the past five years — including social media posts.

Meanwhile, under its media green paper, Watch This Space, the Labour Government is already proposing measures intended to promote “trustworthy” news sources. The concern is that this could favour established outlets such as the BBC while disadvantaging more critical outlets such as GB News and independent journalism.

The Government needs to explain exactly what powers this new Centre will have, who decides what constitutes an “untrue narrative”, and what safeguards will prevent it from becoming a tool for policing lawful dissent.

Animal rights campaigner Anneka Svenska had two police officers turn up at her door and tell her to accept a police record, attend an “online thinking” course or face arrest over comments she made on social media about the incineration of beagles at a company that breeds dogs for use in medical research.

They threatened to arrest her under Section 179 of the Online Safety Act unless she accepted these conditions.

Thankfully, Anneka refused to accept the “community resolution disposal”, which would have remained on her police record. After she engaged a lawyer, the case was dropped.

This thinking course is deeply sinister. It is essentially a combination of a speed awareness course for your thoughts and a therapy session aimed at changing the way people think.

It is the medicalisation of wrongthink. And it isn’t free: one police force charges £175 to attend.

Muslim activists have attempted to cancel national treasure John Cleese, demanding that the comedian be “cancelled” over so-called ‘Islamophobia’.

The Free Speech Union stands squarely with @JohnCleese and his right to free speech. Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws in 2008 — 18 years ago.

A group called “Deenified” released a video attacking the Fawlty Towers star for ‘using your platform to attack Islam’ and called for his Birmingham show — part of a nationwide tour — to be banned.

The activist accused Cleese of ‘spreading dangerous misinformation and creating hostility against Muslims’.

Once again, the term ‘misinformation’ is being weaponised to silence those who do not subscribe to the prevailing narrative.

The activist said of Cleese and his comments: ‘That’s hate speech and you’re just a hate preacher’.

The Islamic website 5Pillars also suggested that demands for Cleese’s Birmingham show to be cancelled could be replicated in other cities with ‘substantial Muslim communities’.

Fortunately, John’s show went ahead without incident.

We must not let an Islamic blasphemy law take root in Britain. It is not a crime to criticise, debate or mock any religion in the UK.

Angela Rayner has serious questions to answer.

It is now almost certain that extremists had the opportunity to influence the drafting of the definition of anti-Muslim hostility.

At the start of the year, the FSU exposed troubling links between all five members of the Working Group tasked with drafting the Islamophobia definition and Islamist extremists. This included links to the Muslim Council of Britain and MEND — organisations with which successive governments have had a policy of non-engagement since 2009, due to their extreme views.

A Freedom of Information request by Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy has now revealed that the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government deleted all responses to the Working Group’s consultation.

Why would the Government do that unless it had something to hide?

Did Ministers instruct officials to delete the submissions?

Did extremists have the opportunity to influence a policy decision that would revive Britain’s blasphemy laws for Islam alone?

Why would the department delete— in an apparent breach of the Government’s own data policy —information that is a matter of historical importance?

The public deserves the truth.
