A Lot of Nigerians Don’t Know What to Do With Their Lives

If we are being sincere, many Nigerians are walking around with a quiet confusion in their hearts. Not because they are lazy or clueless, but because this country has a way of pushing people into directions that don’t match the world they are living in.

You see it everywhere.
A graduate sitting with a degree that feels like a souvenir.
People applying for jobs they’re not sure they even want.
Talented young people wondering how they followed all the rules and still ended up unsure of what their life is supposed to be.

And a big part of the problem is our university system. Let’s be honest: a lot of Nigerian students are studying courses that would make perfect sense if we were still in 1974.

Take a look:
•Sociology - a beautiful course, but the “practical pathway” seems to end at arguing societal issues on WhatsApp status or X.
•History and International Studies - meanwhile, the “international” part ends once you cross the school gate, because the field absorption is basically zero.
•Philosophy - you go look for Aristotle well well baba go dey for Ananias forest dey wait for you. You will search for the truth but “What is truth?” the job market replies, “Truth is… we are not hiring”.
•Mass Communication - taught on equipment older than Nigeria’s democracy. You learn radio production on machines that museums would collect with pride.
•Zoology and Botany - powerful courses, but with zero research funding. So after graduation, you know every species on paper, but in real life the only “animal” you’re interacting with is your neighbor’s stubborn goat… and the only “plant specimen” you’re managing is the tomatoes you’re selling on your WhatsApp status.
•Banking and Finance - structured for the era when the biggest financial innovation was “cheque book”, not fintech, blockchain, or digital payments.
•Public Administration - taught with methods that don’t match modern governance challenges. You learn bureaucracy, not innovation.
•Religious Education - meaningful, but rarely translated into real-world opportunities outside the pulpit. Now na Boko haram go educate you wetin be religious studies.
•Library and Information Science - still stuck in the analogue mindset while the world has moved to AI-driven archiving and cloud systems.
• School final project - Its now chat GPT that is writing final year project and research work for student and the school cannot purchase “turnit in” school subscriptions to monitor plagiarism.

These courses are not useless. They just haven’t evolved. And because of that, millions of young Nigerians graduate with knowledge that the modern economy doesn’t know what to do with….. and neither do they.

So they feel lost.
Confused.
Uncertain.
Not because they lack purpose, but because nobody gave them the tools to find it.
Then social media adds pressure.
Girls with fake bum bum buying cars.
Everyone is “winning”.
Everyone is posting results.
Everyone looks like they “have direction”.

Meanwhile, you’re sitting there wondering if you missed a memo.

But here’s the funny and painful part: after studying these confusing, outdated courses, many Nigerian youths end up doing the same set of side hustles…. selling perfumes, selling nightwear, becoming makeup artists, starting wig pages, doing nails, selling lip gloss, opening thrift stores.
Nothing wrong with the hustles themselves, but when everyone is selling the same thing, who exactly is supposed to be the customer?

In reality, it becomes a tight circle of survival….. hookup girls buying from makeup girls, hookdown boys tipping nail girls, everyone recycling the same small money in one closed economy of struggle.

It’s a cycle of poverty and small-mindedness in a world that has moved into artificial intelligence, robotics, biotech, fintech, machine learning…. and we are here arguing over who sells the best chiffon two-piece.
