What an absolute legend. In grad school, I had the pleasure of being Pat’s assistant down in the XRay lab (best RA gig!) and I have never met someone so dedicated and passionate to his craft. Countless memories. Enjoy your martini, Pat!
Today we celebrated the retirement of the long time director of our XRay Diffraction Facility, Dr. Pat Carroll. Congrats Pat! We had a special visit by Larry Sneddon to help!
sent an undergraduate student off to #MARM2022 alone and she “wowed” the audience with her presentation yesterday. wish we could have been there to see it, but if it was anything like her practice talk, we know how great it was.

them: aren’t you an inorganic chemist?”
me: “still have to know how to make our ligands. the first paper of my inorganic phd was actually to JOC.”
finally got to throw metal ions at our chemistry after 3 years of optimizing ligand synthesis.
added quick literature searching using scifinder into my laboratory curriculum. my students (juniors) have never been exposed to that resource before but their introductions have improved significantly as a result. makes reading their reports so much more enjoyable.
First Honors student to come through the group just successfully presented his work to the department with no disruptions by fire drills in the dorm this time. Congrats again, Tyler, and best of luck in Pharmacy School!
a student contacted me today super excited about starting research and wanted to discuss options in my lab for the summer and I don’t know about you all but that makes me super excited about research.
made a pitch for slap count in my fundamentals of inorganic chemistry class today as we start coord chem and a student asked where they could get a copy. sent them your way @dorbitalgames. told them to get practice because i’m challenging them when we resume in person.
have a newfound appreciation for cyanuric chloride. way more cooperative for our system than the finicky thionyl chloride. thanks dr. josh nelson of @SchelterGroup for the suggestion. turns out the preliminary result is reproducible.
