Tesla took an X-ray photo a year before X-rays were discovered. He looked at it, decided it was ruined, and threw it away.

The photo was of Mark Twain. In 1894 Tesla was shooting portraits of his friend under a Geissler tube in his New York lab. The plate came back splotchy, with a strange shadow across it. Tesla trashed it as a botched exposure.

That shadow was the metal screw that adjusted the camera lens. The tube had been emitting X-rays the whole session, and the plate recorded them. Tesla was holding one of the first X-ray images ever made and had no idea.

Then it got worse. On March 13, 1895, his lab burned down. Every plate, every note, every machine, gone. Eight months later, Röntgen announced the discovery of X-rays and went on to win the first Nobel Prize in Physics for it.

Tesla never claimed priority. He built a sharper tube of his own design, shot images like this one from 8 feet away, and mailed them to Röntgen with his congratulations. Röntgen wrote back asking how he got pictures that clear.

He shot the foot straight through his boot, which is why nails from the sole are scattered across the image like surgical hardware.

He also caught what nobody else wanted to see. Tesla warned early that the rays burned skin and could be dangerous. Edison kept experimenting anyway. His assistant Clarence Dally became the first American to die from X-ray exposure, and Edison, half blind from cataracts, refused to ever touch the field again.

When they cross-checked those names against the actual voter rolls, roughly 1 out of every 4 came back as potential non-citizen voters.

They turned the whole pile over to the DOJ.
