@sxinxm_ This is an awful racist email, but if you really seek to stop this kind of discrimination - don’t generalise all white people as ‘racist’, it’s so hypocritical and puts you on the same level as the student’s mother.
@UKLabour How can we trust a party to be in government when instead of engaging their opponents with rational debate they resort to spreading bare-faced lies??
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson And there’s no problem at all with asking for a confirmatory vote on a deal now we have more information on the deal. There’s a huge problem, however, if the option of remain is included in the decision because that suffers from all the same arguments against a 2nd referendum.
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson You’re absolutely right that Parliament is sovereign - they definitely have the right to overturn the referendum result. But, I’m arguing that such a move would mark a departure from the principle of democracy in the UK.
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson What do you mean they’ve done nothing but respecting the referendum in the last 3 years? The single way to respect a referendum is to carry it out. It doesn’t matter if you debate something for 3 years but then ignore the landmark decision - you’ve still bypassed democracy.
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson Yes, the UK referendums are advisory - but what difference does it make? The EU Withdrawal Act was still passed and do you really want to suggest that politicians in Westminster can decide to ignore such a massive political decision simply because it was ‘advisory’?
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson I’m only saying that a referendum with the option of remaining is undemocratic. Of course if it’s between Boris’ deal, no deal etc, then it is perfectly democratic.
@geoffwilton2 @japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @BorisJohnson Very true. But crucially all 3 general elections in these four years have been/will be enacted - the winners have made a government and run the country. People only get a chance to change their mind once the original vote is enacted. Otherwise referendums lose all legitimacy.
@japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @geoffwilton2@BorisJohnson Yes people have more facts now - but that’s not how the UK operates. We can’t just revote on a government because we didn’t have all the facts - we vote with the knowledge that some information may be false.
@japhixuk @Chandle75790823 @geoffwilton2@BorisJohnson Arguing for a 2nd referendum because people didn’t have all the facts is not a viable position. The electorate will never be 100% educated so we have to allow for people not knowing all the facts. Once you overturn one referendum - you have no legitimacy to stop a 3rd, 4th...20th
