“A glaring gap in the existing crop of smart glasses and VR/XR headsets on the mass market today is the mismatch between how our eyes perceive the world (3D light fields) and how they render content (2D stereoscopic images). [...]

The crux of the issue is that the current crop of displays uses a pair of pixel displays to simulate 3D experiences at a fixed focal distance. This differs from how our eyes move together and adjust lens focus to resolve the world in 3D at various distances. This gap can be seen on most smart glasses & goggles and 3D displays today, including the £3,500 Apple Vision Pro. [...]

This is not just about building a groovy new toy. Outside of the scientific research community, there seems to be little appreciation for the fundamental role in understanding how our eyes perceive the world and reflect our own state. Getting the above right could support new approaches for improving brain and vision health, enhancing learning, and enabling new digital twin workflows.”
