Hobbes’s took the doctrine of original sin and presented it as a secular version by bracketing fallen man within the ‘state of nature’ were human beings and all their shortcomings ~ violence, greed, fear and vanity can come together under a social contract to keep those carnal passions under control ~ what an absolute absurdity.

For Augustine, man’s disorder is ultimately a theological problem: the will has been disordered by sin and cannot heal itself through political arrangements. Political authority can restrain certain manifestations of human corruption, but it cannot redeem the human person.

The Hobbesian solution does not actually cure the passions it begins with. It reorganizes them under an artificial sovereign authority.

Fear becomes an instrument for peace.

Self-preservation becomes the foundation of political obligation.

Competition remains.

Vanity remains.

Desire remains.

Ambition remains.

What changes is the institutional environment in which those passions operate.

What guarantees that the sovereign itself is not composed of the same human nature?

The social contract consequently does not abolish the state of nature so much as enclose it within the sovereign state.

The wolf is not transformed into a lamb.

The wolves are placed under a Leviathan.

If original sin is true, political institutions cannot redeem man because the institution itself is constructed by fallen man.

You can change the constitutional arrangement.

You can change the sovereign.

You can create a republic.

You can create a democracy.

You can create an empire.

You can create an international organization.

But the underlying anthropological problem remains.

Checks and balances may restrain particular manifestations of power; they do not magically transform the moral nature of the people operating the system.

The Christian realist therefore reaches a more pessimistic—and arguably more Augustinian—conclusion than Hobbes:

political order is necessary precisely because man is fallen, but political order cannot redeem man because the political order is itself operated by fallen man.

That creates an ineradicable tension.

Hobbes wants the Leviathan to contain the passions.

Christian theology asks what happens when the Leviathan itself becomes passionate.

The answer is that the instrument created to restrain disorder becomes itself an object of absolute allegiance and total destruction.

Christian theological anthropology translated into a mechanistic, secular and ultimately political anthropology.

If you can identify the inputs and outputs of a system, you can control the system by controlling the inputs.

The federal reserve can be compared to an electrical circuit: you don’t necessarily have to understand every component internally to influence its behavior. If you know where energy or information enters and where it leaves, you can manipulate the system by intervening at strategically important points.

Following its disintegration- demolition at free- fall speed, the Bush administration and other actors exploited 9/11 to advance pre-existing strategic objectives. And after 9/11, the Bush administration explicitly connected terrorism with a much broader geopolitical project. The 2002 National Security Strategy articulated preventive action against ‘perceived threats’ and emphasized transforming the international security environment. Even after 9/11, the United States was still moving in a unipolar world using its overwhelming power to reshape the international system and reinforcing its power.

One could argue that 9-11 was the false- flag catalyst for the political environment in which a pre-existing set of strategic ideas could be transformed into an enormous program of military intervention, regime change, counterterrorism, surveillance, and geopolitical restructuring in the Middle East. Terrorism as an existential threat was sold to the masses to implement their agenda. The war on terror was the war on Mass Man.

The New Testament repeatedly places the believer’s access to God and salvation directly in Christ:

“There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Christ is also presented as the uniquely sufficient High Priest:

“He always lives to make intercession for them.”
—Hebrews 7:25

And the apostles themselves consistently direct people toward Christ, not toward themselves as continuing spiritual mediators.

Paul is particularly emphatic:

“For no one can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
—1 Corinthians 3:11

So saying that Christians today “stand on their shoulders” can be perfectly reasonable as a historical metaphor. Saying that these deceased Christians are presently winning souls through their heavenly ministry is a much stronger claim.
