Early in my time managing, I had this crazy idea.

I wanted to know how many decisions I made in a day as a manager.

So I had an intern follow me around with a pitch counter. You know, the clicker.

Every time I made a decision, I'd point my finger and he'd hit it. It was kind of comical.

If Steve Martin and Martin Short were doing it, it'd be hilarious. But it was me and this kid, just pointing all day.

We started at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. By 6 o'clock - five hours later - I asked him, "What's the clicker say?"

He goes, "You made 181 decisions."

181 decisions!

And I still had an hour before game time. Then I'd have a whole game to manage.

I looked at that kid - I think his name was Will - and said, "Will, can you believe I've made 181 decisions? Do you think I made every single one correctly?"

He's like, "Wow, no, I never thought of that. Probably not."

He was afraid to even say it.

But I said, "You're absolutely right. There's no way I'm going to make every decision correctly."

That opened my eyes.

I needed to find a way to lean into other people that are smarter than me in certain areas to help me make better decisions.

Sometimes the best leadership isn't having all the answers.

It's knowing when to ask for help.

BP fly balls and homers are outs in a game.

I've seen guys rake in BP. Bombs everywhere. I used to go out early and just watch guys hit, even as an opposing player. You can see a hitters approach by watching their BP.

The best hitters I've ever played with hit line drives all over the place.

Pujols, Beltre, Trout. Many others.

They did hit some homers. Mostly in final BP rounds.

Mainly they focused on hitting line drives up the middle.

As @RealCJ10 says, " Hit the ball through the CF wall."

The real problem is our youth/amateur catchers are going straight to this one knee down

They don’t seem to understand that pro catchers have caught traditionally for the greater part of their career.

Let alone the simple fact that pro catchers are the best in the biz, they’re doing it bc they receive relevant info that tells the org it’s more beneficial (supposedly) and they’re being paid.

Youth baseball does not have the same information.
So why are amateur catchers adopting it?

I compare it to “launch angle” in hitting. I cannot work up at the baseball (trying to hit it in the air) if I don’t understand how to work down through, controlling the barrel and the heights of my line drives.

Learn to CATCH, frame, block etc.. traditionally.
Be the best at it.
Then once you get paid, throw that mitt around while laying down in a split.

I can’t wait until someone like Yadi Molina or Buster Posey gets so fed up they go back to endorsing two feet down behind the plate.

Physically it’s just a more athletic position. You can do more from a blocking and receiving standpoint, period.

This video right here, in the end, he just pitched a splitter but this one had a lot of horizontal movement in it. I don't remember Shohei's splitter being moved like this one before. Now it looks like Yoshi's
