@HollandJeffreyR It's so reassuring and reaffirming to hear this from an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ! I've been trying to remind myself of this and reject Satan's unending attempts at discoraging me. Your words help strengthen my resolve to reject that influence and instead trust in the Lord
I know many who struggle with perfectionism. Around the Church I hear many who struggle with this issue: “I am just not good enough.” “I fall so far short.” “I will never measure up.” I hear this from teenagers. I hear it from missionaries. I hear it from new converts. I hear it from lifelong members.
As children of God, we should not demean or vilify ourselves, as if beating up on ourselves is somehow going to make us the person God wants us to become.
With a willingness to repent and a desire for increased righteousness always in our hearts, I would hope we could pursue personal improvement in a way that doesn’t include excessive guilt trips or demolishing our self-esteem.
I believe that Jesus intended the commandment “be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father … in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48) to be a tribute to who and what God the Eternal Father is and what we can achieve with Him in eternity, not a harsh verbal reminder of our shortcomings.
Except for Jesus, there have been no flawless performances on this earthly journey we are pursuing, so while in mortality let’s strive for steady improvement without obsessing about being perfect.
Many of us are so zealous to do what is right that we sometimes get in our own way as we strive to become like Jesus Christ.
When we read or hear the admonition “be ye therefore perfect” (Matthew 5:48), we may think it means to make no mistakes. But such a level of performance simply is not possible.
In his conference address, “Perfection Pending” in October of 1995, President Nelson taught, “In Matt. 5:48, the term perfect was translated from the Greek teleios, which means 'complete.' Teleios is an adjective derived from the noun telos, which means 'end.' The infinitive form of the verb is teleiono, which means 'to reach a distant end, to be fully developed, to consummate, or to finish.'
“Please note that the word does not imply 'freedom from error'; it implies 'achieving a distant objective.’ . . . The perfection that the Savior envisions for us is much more than errorless performance. It is the eternal expectation as expressed by the Lord in his great intercessory prayer to his Father—that we might be made perfect and be able to dwell with them in the eternities ahead.”
Completeness comes line upon line, precept upon precept, grace for grace. With God’s help, we can be just a little better today than we were yesterday, and a little better tomorrow than we are today.
I invite you to look for the Lord’s hand in your life helping you to be better every day in the journey of becoming “complete.”

Being in Chile has been a thrilling experience. In a leadership meeting with the priesthood and sister leaders from 10 stakes this past Saturday, I was amazed with the spiritual depth and insights of the comments and the questions. All 10 stake presidents were returned missionaries. Many were second- and third-generation members with testimonies deep in their hearts.
With the youth on Friday night, the Spirit of the Lord was plentiful. Their eyes were bright and their hearts were open and willing. We have a remarkable future in this very modern and progressive country.
Of course, the missionaries from the two missions in attendance on Friday were amazing. A combination of every country in South America—Chile, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Remarkable!
Finally, our stake conference on Sunday, full of faith and discipleship. I must have shaken 600 hands. A beautiful country! A beautiful people! A very bright future for the restored gospel!

Speaking to youth and young single adults during a devotional in Maputo, Mozambique, I wanted to share with them three things I feel will bless their lives greatly.
First, read the Book of Mormon every day. It is a guide for our lives and will help us prepare for the Lord’s return.
Second, prepare for and receive their patriarchal blessing. That will provide specific guidance for them in their lives and help them accomplish everything Heavenly Father expects of them.
Third, prepare to serve a mission. They can bless people in miraculous ways and they will be grateful their whole lives that they decided to choose the Lord in this way.
