SML Connects Meeting to be held at the park on Thursday, March 23, from 8:45 AM - 10:00 AM. Speakers from Friends of Booker T. Washington National Monument, Blue Ridge Foothills and Lakes Chapter of Virginia Master Naturalist Program, and Park Ranger Betsy Haynes will do a talk.
On Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m., the park will host the program “Footprints: The Women Who Influenced Booker T. Washington.” These women include his mother Jane Washington, Elizabeth Burroughs, Viola Ruffner, and Olivia Washington, his 2nd wife. #WomensHistoryMonth2023
On Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., Doctoral Student Sara Evers will present her research on the site history prior to it becoming Booker T. Washington National Monument.
On Saturday, February 4, 2023, local author Penny Edwards Blue will provide a presentation and book signing of her recently published book, “A Time to Protest”: Leadership Lessons from My Father Who Survived the Segregated South for 99 Years. Starting at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Booker T. Washington National Monument protects 239 acres of fields and woodlands. Open fields of grasses and clover are scattered throughout. In addition to terrestrial ecosystems, the park manages over 3.5 miles of streams, mainly in Jack-O-Lantern Branch and Gill’s Creek.
