My first big caterpillar so far, I think a 4th instar. Between 3 and 4 is such a difference! Like going from middle school (age 12/13) to high school (14). And it’s a lovely light blondie!

Two babies! Little 2nd instar monarch butterfly caterpillars who just had their first molt. Instar means what stage and size they are. Monarchs have 5 instars, meaning they shed their skin to grow bigger 4 times, then the 5th molt is when they pupate, become a chrysalis.
