Young Unionist chairman Jay Basra has called on Queen’s University Belfast to explain why the Order of Service for its Remembrance Sunday service on 8 November states that Orange collarettes are not to be worn. He says members of the Queen’s Orange Society and Queen’s LOL 1845 have worn their collarettes at previous services without issue.
Jay Basra said:
“The Order of Service for this year’s Remembrance Sunday service at Queen’s University Belfast explicitly states that ‘collarettes are not to be worn’. This was not the case in previous years.
“This is despite members of the Queen’s Orange Society and Queen’s LOL 1845 having freely worn their collarettes at previous services of remembrance without issue.
“I find this a deeply disappointing step backwards for inclusion and respect at Queen’s University Belfast. What has been perfectly acceptable for years has now seemingly become a problem, and I believe the University owes those affected an explanation, particularly as they appear to be the only group facing restrictions on what they wear.
“Queen’s frequently prides itself on being an inclusive institution, welcoming and representing people from all backgrounds and traditions. Yet preventing members of the Orange Institution from wearing their collarettes while participating in a service of remembrance raises serious questions about how far that commitment to inclusion extends.
“Remembrance should be an occasion that brings people together, irrespective of their background or tradition. There is no reason why members of the Orange Institution should be made to feel that their identity or traditions are unwelcome.
“This decision only reinforces the perception among some unionist students that Queen’s remains a cold house for their community. I would urge the University to reconsider this restriction and explain why a practice permitted for years is suddenly deemed unacceptable.
“I look forward to clarification from Queen’s University on the reasoning behind this decision, and to seeing this unnecessary restriction lifted.”
On 26 October 1989 the IRA shot a 6 month old baby in the head in West Germany. The child was Nivruti Islania. They wounded the child’s mother & killed the child’s Dad, an RAF corporal. They tried to wipe out a whole family. This was not freedom fighting. There was an alternative
Here's the SDLP leader with Noel Ligget earlier this year after being awarded an MBE for his work in support of community relations in the area.
She even wrote a letter in support of his award.
Yet he is subjected to the vilest abuse today simply for being in the Orange Order.
The programme on the barbaric murder of Robert McCartney & the attempted murder of his close friend, clean-up & cover-up, makes a complete mockery of Kelly & Hargry sitting on the Policing Board. DISGUSTING!
“One toilet in the bar and yet everyone was in at the time. It’s just ridiculous. It was a wee bit scary actually. Like a bloody cult.”
The words of one of Robert McCartney’s sisters about the wall of silence surrounding her brother’s murder.
1995 Orange Order Parade down Garvaghy Road passes of peacefully. Breandán Mac Cionnaith seen yelling in the faces of Garvaghy residents said that the parade proceeding peacefully is demonstration of what can be achieved from the peace process. How times have changed. Portadown.
Are you trying to say not a single "nationalist" lived on route marched last night?
If not, how come "nationalists" on the route "cheered and celebrated" but the ones on the Garvaghy Road didn't?
The ones on Garvaghy Road must be sectarian bigots stuck in the past in your eyes?
Fair play to them, marching where they are cheered and celebrated, instead of thrusting their culture upon a small community for whom their march historically symbolises community oppression, sectarianism, fear and terror.

Mass migration was advertised as diversity, instead it destroys the uniqueness of countless European cultures
How is it "diversity" if instead of all the unique European languages & dialects everyone is speaking Arabic, Urdu or Pashto - regardless if it is Milan, Madrid, Cardiff, Vienna or Berlin?
How is it "diversity" if Mohammed becomes the most common name everywhere?
How is it "diversity" if Europe vanishes?
@Gav_hen7@DownOrangeMan What is that drivel?
Are you wanting to discuss like a grown up or not?
Answer the question. Do you think IRA man Brendan McKenna was lying when he said there were petrol bombs on Garvaghy Road?
Nick Timothy reveals that West Midlands Police had intelligence that Muslims were going to arm themselves to attack Maccabi Tel Aviv fans.
The police suppressed that intelligence, and fabricated a tale of Dutch police telling them Maccabi fans were violent to deflect.
@Gav_hen7@DownOrangeMan So you think IRA man Brendan McKenna was lying when he said there were petrol bombs?
What else do you think he lied to people about?
@Gav_hen7@DownOrangeMan Why do you think you know better than the Police?
If you think they are wrong, tell them there are no weapons and the parade can just pass peacefully because nobody will attack it. Right?
@Gav_hen7@DownOrangeMan Again despite this having nothing to do with the march, your claim is that people were murdered because the march was stopped, so you want to stop the march again.
@Gav_hen7@DownOrangeMan The only people making trouble are sectarian bigots, SFIRA, provos, dissidents on Garvaghy Road.
You claim stopping this march has caused deaths, but you want to stop the march again. WTF is even going on in your head?
