"Pale Fire" has much to recommend it including that remarkable poem. but it is hardly a great novel even set beside "Lolita"--its comedy is too heavy-handed, insistent. like Peter Sellers with a drooping mustache, hamming it up.

I hate "transplant" discourse. I immigrated to NYC when I was 2. Most of my closest friends now did not grow up here. One of the few things I disliked in LA was the attitude toward transplants. I get the economic arguments but the instinctive revulsion is beta city behavior.
