Early in your career, saying yes to everything can feel like a career accelerator. You volunteer for the difficult task, take the extra ticket, stay late, help another team, and become the person everyone knows they can depend on.

The problem starts when being helpful becomes your identity. People stop seeing you as someone who can take on anything and start seeing you as the person who will always take on anything.

Eventually, your calendar fills up with other people's priorities while your own growth gets pushed to the edges.

Being dependable is valuable. But being permanently available isn't the same thing as being valuable.

Learn to ask what the priority is, what needs to move if something new comes in, and whether you're actually the right person to own it.

Your career shouldn't depend on how much work you can absorb.

It should grow because of the value you create.

"Two days before the protests, the chief minister had come to Badlapur. I was one of the first women here to get money under the Ladki Bahin Yojana, so I wanted to thank him as his sister. Two days later, I was detained for participating in protests against the molestation of two minors," said Laxmi Gadhade (30), a mother of two from Maharshtra's Badplapur.

A beautician who worked at a salon until three months ago and a beneficiary of the state government's Ladki Bahin Yojana that gives direct cash transfers to women of Rs 1,500 every month , Gadhade was also among hundreds of women who took part in protests at the Badlapur railway station on 20 August over two four-year-old girls being molested by a janitor in a private school.

Gadhade never imagined that what she thought was a necessary demonstration to stress against the alleged lapses by the police on handling the case would turn out into a violent altercation and eventually her facing a legal case. While Akshay Shinde was killed in an encounter in September, scores of protesters who claim to have not resorted to any violence are facing cases and have received no help from the local leaders and representatives.
