Wow. François Fillon, the 2nd longest serving Prime Minister in France's 5th republic, just said that "the most significant foreign interference" that Europe faces is "first and foremost, that of the Americans," and that "the Americans are constantly interfering in the organization of European countries."
We all knew it, of course, but it's quite stunning for someone of Fillon's stature to say it out loud.
Full transcript:
"When I was Prime Minister [2007-2012], I already had the opportunity to say this: the most significant foreign interference was, first and foremost, that of the Americans.
Here in our country, the Americans are of course constantly interfering in the organization of European countries, and in particular through a very insidious mechanism that allows them to sanction Western companies. That is how, for example, BNP was ordered to pay several billion in fines to America. That is how America can sanction a Western company like Airbus, for instance, to give an advantage to Boeing.
So the most effective interference - and I'm not even talking about social media, about big tech which are all American, and so on - I'm speaking simply about the actions of the American government."

When you understand #MMT, you understand that for every $ the US government spends a $ worth of t-bonds is issued. The $ held by the banks match the $ offered in terms of bonds. As long as bonds pay more interest than reserves, banks will happily buy all bonds offered. EOS.
UN spokesman effectively confirms: Secretary-General Guterres just met with the Iranian regime president and failed to say one word about the tens of thousands of Iranian protesters whom they massacred.
What happened to all that UN talk about human rights and international law?
Japan's 10y is over 3% for the first time in 30 years demonstrating the reflexive feedback loop of CB policy. This continues to be the greatest example of why MMT is right on rates.
Japan has a floating currency, meaning their CB is the monopoly price setter of rates and has shown for 30 years they can achieve any rate along the entire yield curve they want.
In mid-2023 the BOJ signaled they were ending YCC/ZIRP/NIRP and pursuing a macro data driven rate policy. This creates a feedback loop where the market now reprices their reaction function for rates. No longer 0 forever but data dependent and the very data they are looking at to determine what rate to set is positively driven higher by the higher rate itself.
Higher rates on 250% Debt/GDP are a massive fiscal add, unanchoring inflation which feeds into the BOJ data driven rate policy in turn pushing rates higher and the upward spiral begins exactly as MMT would expect.
This woman is about to be executed in Iran.
Her name is Taraneh Rahimi. 20 years old. From Isfahan.
Her crime? Joining the January uprising and stopping the beating of another protester.
Sentence: DEATH after being tortured with electric shocks and threatened with rape in prison.
Despite Taraneh's deteriorating health, an official in the prison's medical unit told her:
"You're going to be executed anyway whether you die from the pain in your leg or die paralyzed, what does it matter?"
Be her voice before try he hang her!

The Fed raised rates 11 times in 16 months (from near zero in March '22 to a range of 5.25-5.5% by July '23). If you take into account both the Treasury interest and (depressed) remittance channels through 2025, the Fed is responsible for adding roughly ~$2-2.5 trillion to the deficit.
Let me introduce you to Sarina Esmailzadeh, another hero from my country, Iran.
She was 16 years old. And like so many teenage girls her age, she had a YouTube channel.
She filmed herself baking cookies. She vlogged about her life in Karaj. She talked about compulsory hijab, about what it meant to grow up as a girl under the Islamic Republic, and about her dreams for freedom.
She laughed on camera. She joked. She danced. She was full of life.
On September 23, 2022, Sarina joined the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising. Amnesty International reported that security forces struck her repeatedly on the head with batons, killing her. She was only 16.
I know I keep repeating her age. But how can I not? She was sixteen.
She wanted the world to understand what it means to be a girl standing against bad laws, discriminatory traditions, and a political system that seek to control a woman’s body, her mind, her clothes, and her future.
Sarina stood against all of it. And I have a question:
How many women in the West know her name? How many college students and campus activists know her story?
I want everyone to know her name. Because the regime could kill Sarina, but it could not kill what she stood for.
We are not giving up. We will continue the path Sarina and so many other brave Iranian girls began.
@WolfgangWa1642@wbmosler "All central bankers doing monetary operations know they can't conduct a reserve drain without a prior reserve add- the CB has to credit accounts (spend first) before taxes can be paid/securities purchased as per MMT. Yet all mainstream economists have this sequence backwards."
I don't get you point. "All money is a claim" doesn't dissolve the hierarchy, it restates it. Reserves are a claim on the CB. Deposits a claim on a commercial bank. Tax is owed to the CB, so only its own liability settles it. Vertical vs horizontal money (Bell 1998), gold standard or not.
@WolfgangWa1642@wbmosler If it were indeed coins, the bank couldn’t have made them. They could only have come from the government first. But if it were bank deposits, the taxes couldn’t be paid with them, as the government can only be paid with reserves (which she also has to create first).
