Atty. Florin Hilbay for Mayor Leni Robredo 🩷🇵🇭
IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE FOR THE MAYOR OF NAGA TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT.
1. The country is trapped in debt. At PhP18.5 Trillion, there is no way that debt can be repaid in the short and medium term. At it gets higher, it will only lead to more currency destruction, inflation, inequality, & pain for ordinary Pinoys. Why carry that burden?
2. The WPS is a powder keg with no easy solutions. Our uneasy relationship with China is complicated by the broader dynamics of dealing with an aging empire handicapped by 40T dollars in debt and a military that can hardly win wars or intimidate others through sheer force projection. Why stand in the middle of giants?
3. A President who wants to change things will have to deal with Congress. The flood control mess is simply the current iteration, on steroids, of the various pork barrel-related shenanigans of its members. What leverage will she have to discipline them?
4. Most Filipinos have been disempowered and have become dependent on welfare. They barely understand that it’s simply an efficient tool for politicians to buy their loyalty with money taken from them and their children. A President who tries to tackle this problem will be arguing with an addict and his doctor who profits from the addiction.
5. The government is obese—it’s bloated and inefficient. Productive citizens are simply over burdened with high taxes and regulation. A President who tries to get the government into shape will be that nasty aunt convincing a couch potato to go out, eat well, and exercise. Why bother?
6. Running for President is hard. Really haaarrrddd. The energy, logistics, coordination, funding required is insane. And the backstabbing can destroy friendships, alliances, and illusions.
On the other hand, the Mayor of Naga can stay on as mayor and work in a high-trust, more manageable, environment, and be an exemplar of good governance. She can sleep at night and be the TOTGA for the rest of Philippine history. And she can maintain that status, risk-free by not running for the presidency.
No, it doesn’t make any sense at all for the Mayor of Naga to run for President in 2028.
BUT SHE SHOULD. Not for herself, but for the sake of a nation so thirsty for good governance. We’ve lost our way for an entire decade already, and it’s time to course correct.
The theorist Hans Hermann Hoppe said that democracy ensures that “the bad ones go to the top.” Maybe this explains why the good presidents have been those who never planned to become one and genuinely hesitated until egged on to run.
[Note: I haven’t talked to her since 2019, and obviously don’t have any power to convince; and I’m not even trying. But, maybe, a few million Filipinos can.]
It’s been 4 years. Still humbled by the fact that this exists at all. Big thanks to all of you that made it happen. If you have a spare 4 hours, go give it a watch on @StreamOnMax.
