Congratulations to QUB Planning Society @PlanQUB on your "Planning the Post Pandemic City:Building Back Better" conference yesterday, great speakers! Gutted I wasn’t able to stay until the end.
I am heart broken to hear the news of Sarah Everard. Cases like this are a stark reminder as to why women, including myself, do not feel safe walking home alone and why we take extra precautions that most men would never even consider.
In a YouGov poll of women aged 18-24, 97% said they had been sexually harassed in public spaces. That’s almost all young women. We owe it to these women to take action @helengt76 @BWCommission @BWV2 https://t.co/HPgVW91aG3
Particularly sparked by the fantastic @womeninplanning event on Friday. It is clear to me that Women’s, POC’s and LGBTQ+ peoples safety needs to be made a focus within urban planning. This is also another reason we need a diverse range of planning professionals and policy makers.
The expectations of women to constantly modify their behaviour is a burden that is far too normalised. It is a world wide problem and even worse for WOC and LGBTQ+ people. I’ve taken the time to read and reflect on how planning can empower women and make cities and places safer.
