Years ago I interviewed Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway. He ran a robot-building competition for middle and high-schoolers, and had this insight I never forgot.

"The purpose of the robotics completion is not building robots. It is enlarging boundary conditions. There is a 'golden decade' from age 7 to 17 when you decide what you can and cannot do, and in a deeper sense, who you are or are not. If, by 17, you have not included 'engineer' in that self-description, you never will. Age 18 is too late."

Looking at my own life, I see how true this was. I would love to see the concept of the "golden decade" more widely understood. The purpose of education from age 7 to 17 should not be seen as instilling facts per se, but rather enlarging boundary conditions so that the occupation and skills most suitable to a kid's intrinsic nature can be discovered.
