What happened after Heather Humphreys got involved in an animal cruelty case

In 2017 the politician forwarded a letter to the Department of Agriculture from the family of a notorious farmer. Then a prosecution against him failed -

Kieran Devlin knew what to expect when he received an anonymous tip-off in February 2017 to say there were starving cattle on Brian Wright’s farm on the outskirts of Newbliss in Co Monaghan. The veterinary inspector had been called there countless times before to investigate Wright, a man notorious for inflicting horrific suffering on his animals.

Department officials tried to assist Wright in cleaning up his act so that he could keep his single farm payment, which was conditional on meeting welfare standards.

Heather Humphreys, then business minister, had a staff member deliver a letter from Wright’s family to the Department of Agriculture. When the case was withdrawn, she refused to answer specific questions.

The issue is becoming a problem for Humphreys, who entered the presidential race after Mairead McGuinness, the Fine Gael MEP, withdrew on health grounds. While Humphreys has repeated her denials of interference, she has yet to answer specific questions, such as whether she or her family knew Wright or his associates. How long she maintains that position remains to be seen.

Kieran Devlin, a retired veterinary inspector who has never previously spoken publicly on the case, said he was left “totally aghast” by the decision to drop the case against Brian Wright, a Co Monaghan farmer, after Humphreys, then minister for business, had a staff member deliver a letter to Brendan Gleeson, the department’s secretary-general.

While Humphreys has insisted she did not interfere in the case, internal Department of Agriculture documents say the charges were dropped after Wright’s family made “representations” to the Fine Gael grandee.
