@JordonStaudy @HwsEleutheroi@RealJoshNiemi Yes, but Thomistic ISO is much stronger. Here's Barrett: "The three persons are undivided in their external works because they are undivided in their internal nature." (Simply Trinity, 291) Just as you cannot divide God's essence, you cannot distinguish their works.
This is the judge that ends the strife,
Where wit and reason fail
My guide to everlasting life
Through all this gloomy vale
Oh may Thy counsels, mighty God,
My roving feet command,
Nor I forsake the happy road
That leads to Thy right hand.
@DirkWalstead@RealJoshNiemi Josh, your side needs to figure out if this is the classical theism of the last 2000 years or if it showed up 20 minutes ago. If it's ancient, it will be well-represented in the literature. If it's recent, it's highly suspect, especially because it isn't in Scripture.
@rjl1689@GraceAlone777@DerekrRJoseph@isaiahhess Thatโs an interesting thought, but you must admit that we are well in the realm of philosophy dictating meaning. The text says merely that the Spirit descended.
@isaiahhess@rjl1689@Hooserdaddy3@darknytPB@DerekrRJoseph This is the Roman and EO position. The individual is not equipped to determine truth through the possession of the complete revelation and the Holy Spirit. The Reformers knew otherwise, that the boy who drives the plow was fully equipped.
@isaiahhess@rjl1689@Hooserdaddy3@darknytPB@DerekrRJoseph Yes, and this is why we equally say you promote false teaching when you say that a plain reading of the NT passages differentiating the personal works of the Trinity leads to tritheism.
@rjl1689@Hooserdaddy3@darknytPB@DerekrRJoseph@isaiahhess Athanasius is right. The use of "one" doesn't bind us to Thomistic ISO, does it? Athanasius just said that the One is also Three ("Triad"). He's not leaning into either the One or the Three, but emphasizing the harmony within the Godhead.
@JoshBuice@gbtseminary@ostrachan That's generous, even. It's deceptive to say that evangelism is the same as authority in the church. Mary was delivering a report to the disciples, not taking their place.
@rjl1689@Hooserdaddy3@darknytPB@DerekrRJoseph@isaiahhess Yes, the Persons share in the works of creation and sustenance, yet we are taught by Scripture to distinguish their works so that we don't become unitarians or modalists. We don't assume that the work of the Persons in creation are identical (undifferentiated).
