I just finished reading The House in the Cerulean Sea. What a marvelous, beautiful story. Everyone brought down by 2020 should read this book to pick themselves up and see their way out of the darkness. Thank you, thank you, @tjklune.

@KVHuntley @HistoryMolly The language requirements never counted toward their degree, that was part of the problem. And students can take 9 of their 33 credits outside the department, a full 25%. Any more than that and one might question whether it is a History degree.

@HistoryMolly @KVHuntley @HistoryMolly students who want to go on to PhDs will still be advised to learn appropriate languages (and more than one year of them). Our students will still be in good shape for continuing on to PhD programs.

Our requirement could be filled if a student came in with a year of language from their undergrad 20 years ago. It was a useless requirement that cost students money and time they did not have.

@KVHuntley @HistoryMolly 3/2 The change was to reduce costs for students who are already suffering from exorbitant student loan debt and to reduce their time from graduation. language is not the only way to encourage and be exposed to diverse cultures and perspectives.

@KVHuntley @HistoryMolly 2/2 And students are not prevented from taking languages or other relevant skills such as GIS (which was always an option instead of language) and will be encouraged to if it suits their goals for their studies and their future..

@KVHuntley @HistoryMolly But there are two faculty who study and teach outside the US and Europe, me included, and the other one, who studied at one of the most prestigious Middle Eastern studies program noted that at the Masters level that program doesn’t require language. 1/2
