@John_ForemanCBE There is a small museum to him at his family home near where I live in the Scottish Borders, well worth a visit and the garden is absolutely stunning. A great commander.
@FMover27@dayum55285@kaskaide1 Chaff and flares were pod mounted. The tornado had 7 external hard points for 3x 1000lb paveway II or 5x paveway IV. In terms of ‘dumb’ or retarded bombs it could carry up to 12 1000 pounders.
@cdrsalamander If you live here (I’m in Scotland) you will know that they pull stunts like this all the time, it really is nothing new. NI is bound by the GFI, God alone knows what Wales is thinking and Scotland has never had a separatist majority vote. They’re all statutory instruments of WM.
@kevverage@agentjono It does rest on your stance on taxation generally. The ‘immoral not to tax it’ position is justifiable under the govt doesn’t take your money it leaves you a proportion of money that rightfully belongs to it. The fact remains that someone earned and purposed that money.
@timdavies_uk@sherlock_comms Exactly. It is certainly true that there has not been a school shooting since the ban but there hadn’t been one before either. Black swan events and the reactions to them prove nothing.
@thinkdefence A return to the historical status quo then. The vast British armies after D-Day were a fighting force but also a blood price for a seat at the top table come the war’s end (bomber command was the tech demonstrator). BAOR was the post war continuation of that thinking.
@FennellJW@danclarkie Because the people of Clacton did not call this election. Our democracy is not Farage’s to manipulate or the other parties and the bin guy to make a joke of. Two wrongs do not make a right, put up candidates and treat the electorate with respect.
@FennellJW Regardless of the circumstances that bring about a by election it is a solemn test of the views of those enfranchised. To indulge a joke candidate is to indulge in the cheapening of our democracy. I would not vote Reform but our electoral process is not a comedy venue.
@NavyLookout I may be optimistic but I'm not sure we will not see something analogous. In the design ships, well, grow. If we end up with what would essentially be a floating Fylingdales controlling a fleet of arsenal ships and sensor barges for redundancy would it be a bad thing?
@FennellJW I have posted this elsewhere but that is not how I read the MoD statement. The release references “larger” amphibious ships and a “combined” UK/NL fleet but that does not necessarily imply identical vessels.
@Gabriel64869839 All commentators seem to echo the idea that we will buy the Dutch design. Now, it may be Bramble contra mundum but that is not how I read the MoD release. It references “larger” ships and a “combined” force which could simply mean UK/NL not a single type formation.
@NavyLookout@FennellJW Everybody seems convinced we will buy Dutch ships and “downsize”. The MoD release does not say that. It references “larger” vessels and a “combined” fleet. The combined part means the national mix it does not necessarily imply identical vessels.
@cdrsalamander Well the future is unwritten but 13 new frigates are ordered or in build. The type 45s are regenerating and 6 multi role amphibs are being designed. 4 SSBN are in build and the SDR mandated 12 SSNs. Add the 2 carriers and their (in build) support ships and things could be worse.
@cdrsalamander Oh my, this does trouble me. As someone who did an emergency tour of NI as part of OP Banner and have some knowledge of subsequent ops I know that at a command and operational level we LNMB and no man in the pub would think we should. But, God I hate politicians.
@ScotForUnity From being cast as engineers and doctors to being portrayed as another version of celto-oirish drunkards with a heart of gold. The worst thing is we seem to like it. Pathetic.
@nicholadrummond But nuclear weapons are not primarily about military effect, their effect is psychological. Just as strategic SLBMs are a statement of a nation's desire to not just exist but persist (we are prepared to do the unthinkable) tacticals lay down a line in a way conventionals cannot.
@2351onthelist @alexgill_ Such a silly game, the services exports of the City of London alone are £2,014 per capita of the English population. Who needs who again? As a garnish Rolls Royce in Derby adds another £520 per person. It proves nothing.
