Contrary to long-held beliefs, Goldenrod pollen is heavy and insect-carried—not airborne—and so it is not the cause of seasonal allergies.

#NativePlantFriday
Today's #NativePlantFriday is commonly known as Rough-Stemmed Goldenrod (Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’),one of the early goldenrod species to be admired in the wild & propagated for garden use. Named for its explosive, firework-like spray of yellow flowers along long-arching stems.
Goldenrods are among the very best herbaceous host plants for the caterpillars of butterflies & moths—an important protein for baby songbirds. Flowers provide a late food source for bees/butterflies; seeds feed small songbirds.
