President Trump said ICE would go after the "worst of the worst." Apparently unable to find them, it is instead rounding up refugees with legal status, flying them in shackles to Texas and in some cases then releasing them and making them pay their own way back. https://t.co/ZFdMRO9zVN Those seized include Christians fleeing persecution abroad, which seems a little off-brand for Trump.
Historically, this population has always existed. What’s differed is America’s approach towards them. Before 1776, they dominated the colonies under the British Crown. During the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) they were called Royalists and violently overthrown, but ultimately compromised with and allowed to continue existing as Americans under one nation and Constitution. During the Civil War (1861-1865), they were called Confederates and many were shot and killed. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), they were kept under military occupation and many were prohibited from holding office. Then, during the Jim Crow era (1878-1964) they exercised regional domination, oppressing and terrorizing Black Americans living in the South. During the Civil Rights Era (1960’s), they were restrained by limited political and military actions. From 1969-1991, they were gradually allowed to regain power. Then from 1992-2016, they faced limited, targeted federal intervention but largely retained regional and rural control. Under Trump, they have reemerged as a dominant force nationwide, fully empowered by the federal government, and the American people once again have to decide how to respond.
@sailaunderscore That’s just not what this data says. It says ~2/3 people don’t care at all, and then a small minority of people have a negative opinion.
@devahaz @LittleMammith I think there's a negative correlation with hustle startup 'just build/ship' culture and liberal arts education / longform reading & writing
