🇿🇼 ZIMBABWE TRAINED THE ENGINEER. AFRICA GAVE HIM THE PROBLEM: WE HAVE THE MINERALS - SO WHY ARE OTHER COUNTRIES BUILDING THE INDUSTRIES AROUND THEM? There is a particular Zimbabwean audacity in believing you can change that equation. Donovan Chimhandamba, a Zimbabwean-trained engineer, has spent much of his career trying to do exactly that. Soon after graduation, he had a short stint in corporate, and then he started building companies. In 2011, he founded Arkein Capital Partners, an investment platform from which ventures including Nyanza Light Metals, Diaspora Infrastructure Development Group (DIDG) and, later, Transition Metal Industries emerged. The ambition crossed borders. Arkein says its early industrial portfolio extended across South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda and Zimbabwe, with a balance-sheet estimated to be exceeding US$625 million by 2016. Then came Nyanza. Today, Chimhandamba leads Nyanza Light Metals, the company he founded in South Africa - taking African titanium minerals and processing them into titanium dioxide pigment, used in products from paints and coatings to other industrial applications. And the scale is enormous. Chimhandamba previously described the project under his control at US$750 million. In 2026, as construction moved forward, the project's reported value had risen to about US$870 million. This is no longer simply an engineering career. It is industrialisation at scale. Because Chimhandamba's argument is simple: Every mineral Africa exports without processing can mean exporting something else with it - Engineering. Science. Manufacturing. Jobs.
