33 years ago today, Galileo flew past asteroid 243 Ida at 28,000 mph.
Its main high-gain antenna hadn't deployed properly, so engineers had to get the science home through its tiny backup antenna.
Hidden in those images was another surprise:
Ida had a moon.
Dactyl became the first moon ever discovered orbiting an asteroid.
Hardware problem. Mission carried on. New discovery made.

60 years ago today, we saw Earth from the Moon for the first time.
On 23 August 1966, Lunar Orbiter 1 took the first photograph of Earth from lunar orbit.
The best bit?
The photograph wasn’t even originally planned. The spacecraft was there to map potential Apollo landing sites.

It’s been using the backup ever since.

Engineers: a beginner gets to add ONE more tool. What are you giving them?
Nowadays, they are tasked for 15 years, and this is only to accommodate the amount of fuel they take to keep them in geosynchronous orbit. However, some operators prefer to use the fuel at the end of 15 years to push them out and clean them up and instead choose to operate them long after their scheduled end date, at which point they can no longer clean the orbit they were in.
62 years ago today, 19 August 1964, Syncom 3 was launched.
It became the first communications satellite placed into geostationary orbit and later carried live TV coverage of the Tokyo Olympics across the Pacific.
Today, thousands of satellites sit above us, providing TV, internet, weather and communications.
