On this day in 1917, the Mont-Blanc exploded in Halifax Harbour, releasing a 2.9 kiloton explosion.
The largest human-made explosion in history to that point, it killed nearly 2,000 people and injured 9,000.

Today we lost one of our greatest actors, Donald Sutherland. It was my honor to work with him many years ago, and I will never forget his charisma and ability. If you want a master class in acting, watch him in “Ordinary People”. My condolences to Kiefer.

On this day in 1951, the Indian Act was amended to remove the ban on the Potlatch and the Sun Dance.
Both ceremonies had been banned since the late-19th century.
Despite the ban, many First Nations still practiced the Sun Dance and Potlatch in secret.

Top day at Dieppe looking at the 19 August 1942 raid. Having started at the Memorial (museum) we went to Puys. Such a moving place. The Canadian soldiers arriving on that beach stood no chance

Struck by the grave of the Ingram brothers. One killed in the Dieppe raid and the other two years later in Normandy. A poignant epitaph from the bereft parents. Heartbreaking

19 June 1941 | A Hungarian Jewish boy, Tibi Yaakov Yisrael Veis, was born.

In June 1944 he was deported to #Auschwitz and murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.
