On David Platt’s 60th birthday, a look at why he is one of the greatest ever English goalscoring midfielders.
Here are all of his 27 international goals, in order, crammed into 140 secs.
Platt was incredibly reliable in an England shirt.
It seemed like the build-up to World Cup 90 had lasted forever. Countless preview books and programmes had brought me to fever pitch!
Finally, on 8th June, the wait was over.
The holders, Argentina, faced Cameroon. Surely a nice, leisurely warm-up for Maradona et al? Comfortably dispatch the “plucky” Africans and get on with the tournament.
François Omam-Biyik’s goal, Benjamin Massing’s foul on Caniggia, and Barry Davies on 🎙️.
It’s 36 years since Italia 90 kicked off in sensational style.

🗓️ June 8, 1990 - One of the greatest shocks in World Cup history.
Defending champions Argentina, led by Diego Maradona, are beaten in the opening game of the tournament by Cameroon.
Goalkeeper Nery Pumpido let a tame header from Francois Omam-Biyik dribble through his hands in the 67th minute which proves to be the only goal of the game at the San Siro.
It was a first World Cup finals win for the Indomitable Lions who were down to 10 men when they scored and finished the game with nine after a horror tackle from Benjamin Massing on Claudio Caniggia that has gone down in World Cup infamy.
Cameroon defender Andre Kana-Biyik said: “When we entered the shared warm-up area, the South Americans seemed a little haughty. As soon as we launched into our battle cries, I saw the fear in their eyes.”
Cameroon went on to become the first African team to reach the World Cup quarterfinals with 38-year-old Roger Milla scoring four goals as a substitute.

A Brazilian champion with São Paulo in 1986, he scored more than 100 goals for the club before a $3.5m move to Napoli in 1987. Alongside Diego Maradona, Careca helped Napoli to Serie A and UEFA Cup glory.
Although he missed España 82 through injury, he was Brazilian football’s biggest name by Italia 90, where he scored twice.
Careca means “Bald”, a nickname earned in childhood while idolising the famous clown Carequinha.
