Try this instead. “I see that Paxson is afraid of vegans. And he calls himself a Texan! We’re tougher than that. 😂” Or: “Y’all, he’s afraid of vegans. How in the heck is he gonna be strong enough to protect you when China comes for your job?” 3/
@wil_da_beast630@Micha_Siegel Greater point noted - Tufts’ undergrad campus is maybe 25 min from downtown Boston’s subway system (the T). Not as big of a difference…
@DaleCloudman@BretDevereaux All to say, RHG should take some time to learn the source languages to develop greater familiarity - he could make more substantive and meaningful contributions if he did.
@DaleCloudman@BretDevereaux AI will definitely help expedite the search, but part of this (which AI will probably learn to incorporate) is understanding which questions to ask. That often requires understanding the language in and out - drawing on a solid basis in grammar and form.
@DaleCloudman@BretDevereaux This isn’t what Bret describes. RHG would need to look through the corpus to find other instances of use. He finds one, but doesn’t go further in finding others so that he can examine the semantic or morphology etc..
Lost something on @wmata metro dear to me yesterday. Some confusion on the right procedure to find it, but the station manager at Ft. Totten just now was helpful - calling all the succeeding stations to check for it. @wmataGM, kudos to the manager for helping during rush hour!
@mattyglesias What do you make of the ‘decolonize your bookshelf’ movement to de-center the western canon? Can you appreciate the tension between de-centering certain works and reframing them for modern audiences? Where does that leave people who identify with more traditional adaptations?
@Alonso_GD 1) we don’t know what people will think in the future, but we do know that people base perceptions of history on fiction;
2) there is an active movement to de-center “Western” media (“decolonize your bookshelf”).
Can’t simultaneously de-center and appropriate subject media.
Not that I agree with them, but it’s silly to divorce this current volley in the casting discourse from the rest of the discourse. People only started talking about this stuff because we justly called out racist casting decisions in the past. They hunger for a neutral standard!
So it went from “Helen of Troy wasn’t a Black woman” to “Ok, Helen of Troy didn’t actually exist but she was created by Ancient Greeks and we should respect their culture”. Lol
@FrankTracy Not saying I agree with them, but this is just such a lazy and incurious approach. Are you that tired with life or have you always been like this?
@TerryMoran A problem with this, though, is that those castings are now seen (rightfully) as a problem. So doing it from the other angle just comes across as hypocritical.
