@John_EdwardsUK Good point, well put. I never heard of any official asking to see the paperwork relating to these vessels. If I sailed my own commercial boat into French waters, I would rightly be asked to show a folder full of certificates relating to insurance, competence, etc etc.

@MittensOff No, the game is not up. When (if) it gets to court, he can argue that an abandoned vessel in mid channel is subject to the rules of salvage. He can do with it as he pleases. The worst would be attempting to litter the seabed - £200 fine, if it happened, which it did not.

@Inevitablewest If the owner comes forward to complain, he will first have to pay an agreed salvage fee. Then he can answer questions concerning his competence certificate, commercial marine insurance, proof of lifesaving drills, provision of adequate lifesaving equipment etc etc.

@Robbie_Reasons I think we have heard quite enough declarations of emergencies, mainly false ones by the RNLI. The Home Sec has said that a priority is to defeat the people smuggling gangs. Well here we are, volunteers are doing just that. No way will the Gov actually act, they don’t want to.
