Donnie Andrews (w/ shank in the video) was one of the main inspirations for the character of Omar. On this day in 1986, Andrews, along with professional boxer and contract killer Reggie Gross, killed Zach Roach and Rodney Young in what came to be known as “The Gold Street Murders.” His pay was $5,000 and two ounces of heroin for the hit. A few months later, Andrews’s conscience, combined with being tired of the game and tired of running, led him to turn himself in to BPD homicide detective (and future The Wire co-creator) Ed Burns, along with prosecutor Larry Gibson. He cooperated and wore a wire, helping implicate Gross and Warren Boardley, who had taken out the hit. In 1987, expecting a reduced sentence, Andrews was sentenced to life in prison. With help from David Simon, Ed Burns, and prosecutors, Andrews was paroled in 2005.

Can't get over just how bad that was. Awful subs, far too late. ZERO game management - cheap fouls given away non-stop. Bruno, Cunha, Mbeumo all horrific.
