@ChevaucheeN 14th Century Europe sucked. Deal with it.
Calling this a historically inaccurate depiction of “medieval times” is like calling the Wonderful Whites of WV a historically inaccurate depiction of Space Age America.
@AZiHeron That’s all fine. But in the case of The Northman, what’s the point of not making as good of a film (or even close, really) as John Milius was able to make?
@alainastruc@Tom_Rowsell Well it does take place in the 1300s, which was a pretty apocalyptic century. The Middle Ages aren't a monolith. (Not saying that justifies any head-scratching creative decisions Eggers is sure to have made, but as always with the teaser stage of his movies, so far so good.)
@tangotiger As a Reds fan in ‘19, I remember this very well.
Votto and now Ward dabbled in the art of “producing without producing.” It’s almost like a loophole in batting analytics. They get to keep a respectable wRC+, pitchers get to keep them from actually producing any runs.

@souljagoyteller True but there’s been one in every generation.
Shohei for Millennials
Bonds for GenX
Mays for Silents
one of the Negro Leaguers (Gibson or Charleston) for GIs
Babe Ruth for Lost
Boomers are the most ambiguous. Nolan Ryan had the most mystique, even if he wasn’t the greatest.
@HalToHell It’s very hard and Schwarber’s odds are still long but Berkman all played most of his career in the steroid era. He’s clearly a much better overall hitter (evidenced by his OPS+) and player (WAR) than Schwarber but 450+ HR is a lot more exciting now than when Adam Dunn did it.
@BestMovieMom The fight hits the big moments — Rocky drawing blood in round 2, chopping Drago down in the final round — but otherwise leaves any semblance of believability miles behind as Rocky just bounces back from hundreds of brutal headshots.
The training montages are perfect.
@fringeblog@cairoasmith Of course they care about making a quality movie, which is why they only greenlight movies that have made money before, have six of their top writers workshop the script, assign several studio execs to assist the director on set….
@ryokagoon@tobeyy_mag Judging from the reactions in that scene, every person in that room would have forced her into the ER.
The fact that she didn’t end up in the hospital was either lazy writing or the movie leaning way into the comedy side of horror/comedy.
@AndrewG754841@notgaetti Luckily the goal is to score and drive in runs and McGwire was one of the best to ever do the latter ( albeit in a relatively short career).
@mike_petriello@wyshynski I think a few past cases, especially Dawson 1987, told the new-school guys “ok, you don’t REALLY care about this winning team thing… it’s just RBI.” That and one player can’t single-handedly turn a team around like in hockey and basketball.
@ElectionNerd05@tweeter_handle@questionableway Baseball on tv is great now but I think for a long time — late 60s to just recently — football was the far better tv experience. And MLB has spent the first 10-20 years of the hi-def era making it difficult for fans to watch games, and is just now starting to remedy that.
@LanceMcAlister And there aren’t going to be any more rebuilds; at least not like the teams they assembled in 2009-2013 and 2020-2021. “Sustainable winning” is what they call it now. No legit contenders, but no fire sales either.
@LanceMcAlister I agree completely except with one quibble: the slow-motion tear-down started after the 2020 season with the trade of Iglesias (still one of the best closers in MLB). That 2021 team was a hamstrung version of the team just entering what should have been its contending window!
@VandyonTigers Batting averages were way higher in my little league than in MLB in the 90s, despite having way more inconsistent umpire strike zones. Therefore, the hitters were better.
