There is something deeply troubling about a society that is quick to demand the harshest punishment for children, while celebrating convicted plunderers, tolerating corruption, and rewarding leaders who normalize violence.

Young people do not grow up in a vacuum. They learn from the values we model, the behavior we reward, and the systems we build around them. Violence rarely begins at the moment it becomes visible. It is often preceded by bullying, social isolation, neglect, untreated trauma, and countless missed opportunities for intervention.

If we want children to reject violence, then we must also be willing to examine the ways our society excuses, glorifies, and profits from it. We cannot celebrate violence among adults and expect young people to learn a different lesson.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas decried the recent political developments, including the Senate leadership change on Monday, in a pastoral letter released Thursday.

“It is confusing. It is unbelievable. It is pathetic. It is disgusting. It is shameless. How did we reach this low level of public service?” Villegas wrote.

He also urged the faithful to pray and actively seek political change, and to vote more wisely in the next elections.

For all the noise around 2028 and the #impeachmentwatch, the latest head-to-head numbers suggest that the specter of a Sara Duterte presidency is really far from inevitable. In fact, it appears increasingly fragile. The gap vs Robredo or Tulfo narrows, and in some configurations, disappears altogether. And here’s to hoping that the House of Representatives— about to vote on her second impeachment— is paying attention. They must refuse to be intimidated that a vote to impeach the Vice President is an invitation to suffer from a retaliation of a future President. Because ghosts only haunt those who believe them. And the most recent numbers are telling us that the fantasy of second Duterte presidency will soon be just that: a creature of speculative fiction meant to hold us and our institutions under their spell. Meanwhile, the evidence against VP Sara is not spectral at all. Billions of pesos moving in and out of Duterte-linked bank accounts. Millions in confidential and intelligence funds pocketed. The House is called to stand their ground and discharge their constitutional duty to impeach a high official that has culpably violated the Constitution and betrayed public trust. They need not scurry like rats at the mere sound of Duterte, as they did in Rodrigo’s presidency and as the aspirational Sara attempts to do so now. They owe the Filipino people courage, not fear of imagined ghosts.

COA ORDERS RETURN OF ₱375M OVP CONFIDENTIAL FUNDS



The Commission on Audit has disallowed ₱375 million in confidential funds of the Office of Vice President Sara Duterte, citing serious breaches of spending rules.

The funds, released in three ₱125M cash advances in 2023, are now ordered returned by VP Duterte and accountable officials.

COA flagged key issues in the spending:

• Unauthorized handling of funds – cash advances were transferred to individuals not designated as accountable officers

• Unproven “confidential operations” – at least ₱62 million in rewards lacked proof of successful intelligence activities

• Questionable procurement – nearly ₱199 million in expenses were supported only by acknowledgment receipts, not valid invoices

• Prohibited reimbursements – some expenses were made even before cash advances were granted. | via Marianne Enriquez/News5
