I feel that if we can’t get the portrayal of Celie & Shug’s lesbian relationship right, then we miss a critical part of Celie’s character development & the subversive message Walker is making about the redemptive potential of the erotic in black women’s relationships.
I call it the Macbeth Syndrome, that you can’t peacefully enjoy the privilege of your own position because you consciously and unconsciously know the violence it took to exact it. You are always haunted by the possibility that what you’ve done to others will be done to you.
A reminder that even if YOU don’t personally need or want them, ordering them is important to show the US government they should keep supplying them. Gift them to a local mutual aid org or a neighbor if you have enough tests.
