I’ve been in Jos for like 5 days now and I have a lot to say.

Firstly, I never knew a people could be this nice and kind and respectful.

I almost felt sick because I never knew people could still be like that.

Lagos has fried my brain. People call you Sir while offering every service to you.

From the suya guy to the super market attendant to the local restaurant to every single person.

I’ve never seen this before in my life. In Lagos, the way I know the food in a restaurant would be good is if the woman is rude.

I never trust the food of a polite food seller in Lagos.

But I’m here where everyone treats you with respect.

Then things are cheaper. The uber that will normally cost 10 million naira here in Lagos is 2,500 here.

I’ve never seen life lived like this before. I see clear road everywhere.

I’m not scared of holding my phone carelessly.

A simple explanation for this is that women may forgive men who did things that met the legal definition of rape under certain conditions:

1. Stopped action
2. Sincere apology
3. Extenuating circumstance such as extreme inebriation
4. No intent to cause harm
5. Genuine remorse, as indicated by crying or similar

Penetration without consent, especially after being told “no” firmly, is not okay and meets the definition of rape.

Unfortunately some men, especially before #metoo created awareness, who meant no harm may have crossed boundaries with rationalizations such as “we had sex before so she will like it and change her mind” or “she is very aroused so she must really want penetrative sex even though she’s saying ‘no’.”

Cases that involve boundary crossing while “fooling around” are not going to be as traumatic, especially if the action is halted in response to yelling or pushing, as cases that involve deliberate attempt to harm and threats of violence.

We have given all cases the same name, as this is most logical. “No” means no, and the moral aim is to ensure bodily autonomy. But there is obviously a spectrum of severity.

Many women furthermore basically internalize coercive male sexual as “boys being boys” because so many men assert that coercive behavior, such as lying to get sex, is normal. Lying to get sex is morally equivalent and can be in many ways more harmful than physical force, yet men expect women to tolerate this without retaliation.

Consider that a man might forgive a friend who beat him up at some point. But there are varying degrees of physical assault. You might forgive a friend for punching you but not forgive a friend for beating you with a metal baseball bat and putting you in the ER.
