Before beginning this assignment I didn’t realise just how many resources there were to be found on Twitter, both from institutions and individuals. I was especially interested in seeing what schools around the world are doing to engage their students #UoNTeach
@stephanieUON Getting students involved in waste reduction in the community is an excellent step towards creating conscientious global citizens who feel like they hold a stake in their local area.
@stephanieUON What a great resource! It’s really amazing to reflect on how much this assignment has made me excited to teach what I’ve learned and put my knowledge into practice. It’s great that you’ve been motivated too!
@stephanieUON Very true Steph, including parents as well as students in teaching sustainability is such an important thing and would make it more likely that households and families make permanent sustainable changes.
@MrCrookUoN Yes, it's amazing walking down to the Jesmond shops and remembering the photographs I've seen of only one building there and thinking about the history of the area!
Looking into the history of the local area and community buildings has given me a greater sense of connection and interest in Newcastle. I’d be so enthused to share this knowledge with students and community members. #UoNTeach
@Samanth74933065 Zara’s House Refugee centre has one! Sometimes I take the toddlers from childcare out there to pick tomatoes and melons for their morning tea. They’re also working on building a chicken coop so they can have hens.
@DavidDelforce I certainly feel like I’ll be doing a lot of professional development to get my technology and programming skills up to snuff in the next few years.
@Samanth74933065 I’ve had students plan an advertisement using visual literacies collaboratively and write a script for it. They were so engaged that some stayed behind during lunch so that they could also act out the advertisement for me.
Dolan (2016), emphasises the importance of getting students outside to learn, especially in local environments to develop a sense of place and foster a connection to the community. What are some activities to do this?
@kehaniw1 How exciting! I’ve been following sydneynativebees on Instagram and they sometimes provide schools with hives of native stingless bees which could work well. https://t.co/Mil30ZfSq4
@Christo52918550 A very important topic to cover in Australian schools, especially when talking about how different communities are affected like the currently dropping levels of the Sydney dams https://t.co/bvDhdA2WYP
@emmamurphy96 I agree, making sure that you’re well informed as a teacher and collaborating with/learning from other professionals and community members is such an important thing to focus on.
@MrCrookUoN That’s a great point, with Australia becoming increasingly diverse we really need to be aware of the potential needs and backgrounds of all our students and their families.
@David63467081 Yes, the world is so connected now that 21st century classrooms and lessons need to keep up and ensure that our students are prepared to contribute to the increasingly changing global community.
@David63467081 That would be great, you could use the book Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge by Mem Fox to broach the subject of Dementia and Alzheimer’s and give students an idea of what’s happening before you start.
@MrCrookUoN That would be such a fun and creative activity! Especially if there are parents and grandparents who also attended the school so we could make multigenerational collages!
I’m interested in tying the past to the present in the minds of my students, what better way than to visit the sites of historical photographs and hold them over the modern image like this artist has. #uontteach#localhistories#localgeographies https://t.co/Qf1q1qeYbM
@MrCrookUoN I think the big point was that a lot of women come to Australia not able to read and write in their native language, let alone English and the literacy shows that you really need to be literate in your mother tongue before learning a new language so Zara’s House teaches both.
#UoNteach Here’s something to celebrate #culturaldiversity in the local area. Zara’s House refugee women’s and children’s centre is having its official opening this Thursday. I’ll be contributing a cake to help feed our guests and donors. https://t.co/Gkexe0okTm
@SamHallett7 I’d love to see this spark off a discussion in the classroom about what the school is already doing and could improve on, maybe as the start of a persuasive writing unit?
