#otd 1846 a letter was sent to poetry publishers Aylott & Jones from one of their new poets, a chap named Currer Bell, offering a series of novels from he and his brothers. They turned it down but this was the first notice that the Bronte sisters had turned to novel writing!

Did you know that the very first Bronte biography wasn't Elizabeth Gaskell's 1857 'Life of Charlotte Bronte' but rather 'Jottings on Currer, Ellis & Acton Bell' by the mysterious 'W.P.P'? Here's a fascinating review from May 1856 in the Monmouthshire Merlin:

Charlotte Bronte bought her great friend Mary Taylor, born #otd 1817, a cow after she emigrated to New Zealand! She became a successful businesswoman, a feminist journalist, a travel writer, novelist and mountaineer! Mary is on the left here, climbing in Switzerland in 1874!

My father, Patrick, was granted the licence to the curacy of Haworth today in 1820. He would make the five/six mile journey from Thornton as needed to avoid uprooting his family unnecessarily if the congregation forced him to resign.
