A bolide exploded high above New England in Earth's atmosphere on Saturday afternoon, creating a loud booming noise that was heard across the region.
The flash of the exploding meteor was detected from the GOES-19 weather satellite's GLM instrument.
☄️ SUNDAY NEW ENGLAND METEOR UPDATE: The broken up meteor landed in Cape Cod Bay! Doppler radar imagery from MA, NY & ME indicates that debris was falling over Cape Cod Bay at the time of the sonic boom. This picture is a composite of radar images. Water depth there is 100ft.
NEW ENGLAND METEOR UPDATE: the space rock had a diameter of about 3 ft before it broke up. According to NASA, it was traveling at 75,000mph & broke up approximately 40 miles above Earth. The energy released equivalent to 300 tons of TNT. The boom/shaking was heard in RI, MA & CT
