The R’OHOKET Project is hosting microbiologists from national veterinary laboratories for an Advanced Microbiology Training. The training will take place at the AMR Laboratory at ILRI in Nairobi, from April 7–11, 2025 and aims at strengthening regional microbiological expertise.

The aim was to present the sourcing and storage capabilities to feed 500,000 pre-primary and primary school children🍅🥦
The students got an opportunity to volunteer in the kitchen👨‍🍳👩‍🍳 and visit the school where F4E is working📚✨

🌽🍏🍲 Did you know that 1/3 of the world population is affected by malnutrition?

✅ On March 27-28, 🇨🇵 will host a Nutrition For Growth summit in Paris (#N4GParis) to maintain a high level of engagement towards ending malnutrition.

▶️ To prepare for this important conference, France in 🇰🇪 organized this week at @AFKenya a roundtable in partnership with @MOH_Kenya with a distinguished (and 100% feminine!) panel: @MarthaNyagaya @LaurenLandis1 @wawiranjiru @vkirogo @Liz_Kimani @AfshanKhan_. We deep dived on:
👉🏾 the current nutrition priorities in Kenya;
👉🏾 lessons learnt from the previous summit in Tokyo ($27Bn mobilized through 396 commitments made across 78 countries);
👉🏾 innovative programs and partnerships on school feeding @food4Educatio, agrifood systems and food system transformation.

It was also the opportunity to taste alternative nutritious food sources including camel milk 🐫 & insect-based products 🪳!

1️⃣ Nutrition and health are essential to life.

In #Simbi @HomaBayCountyKE, we support every day 1700 households displaced by last year's floods. Through @UNICEFKenya and the @KenyaRedCross, our 1,5M€ funding aims to provide food supplements, cash transfer and medical assistance for improved nutrition, reduced poverty and increased well-being of mothers and children under five.

Nutrition is at the core of human and social development. Nonetheless, 1/3 of the world population is affected by malnutrition. We need to act.

✅ On March 27- 28, 🇨🇵 will host a Nutrition For Growth summit (#N4GSummit) in #Paris to maintain a high level of international engagement towards ending malnutrition.

In 🇰🇪 we are working to respond to this problem through concrete actions:
1️⃣ We support major school feeding programmes.
2️⃣ We provide food supplements, cash transfers and medical assistance to populations displaced by floods through @UNICEFKenya & @KenyaRedCross.
3️⃣ We work with Kenyan researchers to develop healthy food.
4️⃣ French private investors support innovation in the agri-food sector in Kenya, such as #Creadev in @VictoryFarmsLtd.

Today, the United Nations Office in Nairobi @UN came alive with the spirit of Francophonie as we marked #UNFrenchLanguageDay, bringing together distinguished guests, students, and professionals to celebrate the power of the French language as a tool for global opportunities.

In the presence of H.E. Ms. Nefertiti Tshibanda, Representative of the @OIFrancophonie (Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF)) for the African Union, and the Group of Francophone Ambassadors in Kenya, the event showcased how mastering French opens doors to international careers, particularly within organizations like the @UN

🚨 Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance in East Africa: The R’OHOKET Project in Action! 🚨

🌍 The R’OHOKET Project, a two-year French Government-funded initiative, is equipping Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania with tools to prevent and combat AMR using a One Health approach—integrating human, animal, and environmental health.

🇰🇪 Kenya: Building Stronger Health Systems & Community Awareness

📌 Engaging Major Healthcare Facilities

On September 27, 2024, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) introduced R’OHOKET to 8 major public referral hospitals in a high-level meeting in Nairobi.

✅ These hospitals are at the frontline of AMR detection and treatment—strengthening them means better surveillance, faster response times, and improved patient outcomes! 🏥💊

📌 Kenya Red Cross: AMR Awareness & Training

📝 Knowledge, Attitude & Practice (KAP) Survey
📍 Counties covered: Uasin Gishu & Kajiado
👥 Total respondents: 960 (490M, 470F, including 67 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs))

🔎 Goal? Understand public perceptions, behaviours, and knowledge gaps around AMR to develop targeted interventions.

👩‍⚕️ Community Health Promoter Training
✔️ 110 trained on AMR surveillance & stewardship:
🔹 Uasin Gishu: 55 (30F, 25M, including 1 PWD)
🔹 Kajiado: 55 (34F, 21M)

🏛️ Sub-County Government Officials Training
✔️ 35 officials trained to enhance AMR surveillance & policy implementation:
🔹 Uasin Gishu: 20 (17F, 3M)
🔹 Kajiado: 15 (9F, 6M)

🔹 More trained professionals at community & policy levels mean improved AMR prevention & response in Kenya! 🚀

🇹🇿 Tanzania: Strengthening AMR Education in Universities

📌 Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) is working to bridge knowledge gaps in AMR education.

📋 Key achievements:
✔️ Developed an online checklist to assess AMR content in all medical & veterinary schools in Tanzania.
✔️ Drafted a short course curriculum on AMR, aimed at specialized training for medical and veterinary professionals.

🔹 AMR is not just a medical issue—it starts with education! By ensuring doctors & veterinarians fully understand AMR, we create a future workforce capable of tackling it effectively. 🎓👩‍⚕️🐄

🇪🇹🇺🇬 Regional Efforts in Ethiopia & Uganda

📌 International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has been working with governments to improve AMR surveillance and response in animal health.

💡 Key actions:
✔️ Stakeholder consultations with AMR focal points in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
✔️ Uganda: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry & Fisheries identified priority areas for AMR collaboration.
✔️ Ethiopia & Uganda: Action plans with clear timelines were finalized for AMR intervention in animal health.

🔹 Strengthening AMR response in livestock and agriculture is critical—healthy animals mean safer food and reduced transmission of resistant bacteria! 🐄🥩🌾

🇫🇷🤝🇰🇪 is proud to have worked with Wangari Maathai, who championed our "environmental new deal" in 2007 🌱, and her Green Belt Movement (🌳 3.8M trees planted in the Aberdares Forest through AFD support). Last year, a Wangari Maathai's new variety of 🌹 rose was launched at the French Embassy.
