I don't know what Ratcliffe told Russian officials, but I think the framing in both articles about the battlefield situation probably does not convey the Kremlin's perspective. Russian advances have slowed in 2026 compared to 2025 and a breakthrough in the near future is unlikely, but Russia's battlefield priority is to seize the rest of the Donetsk region, and its forces have increased their advances in that direction over the past ~6 weeks, threatening the remaining Ukrainian-held cities. In addition, Russia's rate of advance in 2024 and 2025 peaked in the autumn. Russian ballistic missiles and jet-powered UAS/cheap cruise missiles are also posing a growing challenge for Ukraine going into the winter. Russia is facing a variety of challenges as well, but I don't think Putin regards the current situation as a stalemate, which will inform his strategic thinking of whether to escalate elsewhere.

Shells, mines, other ammunition and drones subsequently detonated, with Zelensky describing the scale as significant. BIG: Germany is preparing what officials are calling a “Zeitenwende 2.0” toward Russia.

Berlin is expected to formally blame Moscow for the August drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and pair the attribution with tougher national measures, more support for Ukraine and a major new EU sanctions package.

The shift is meant to mark an end to earlier restraint on Russian hybrid attacks.

Around 1,600 individuals and companies are reportedly under review for EU sanctions, with broader action expected this autumn.

The exact German measures are still being finalized, but Berlin is preparing for a sharp Russian response.

Since last evening, efforts have been underway in the village of Myla near Kyiv to deal with the aftermath of a Russian drone strike. On-site coordination centers have been set up to assist people. All necessary services are deployed. State Emergency Service units are on the ground – with more than 300 personnel involved. A warehouse was struck, followed by a detonation. Unfortunately, the surrounding infrastructure has suffered significant damage – residential buildings, as well as a care home for elderly people and people with disabilities, have been damaged. As of now, 27 people have been reported killed. One of those killed was the head of the Dmytrivka community, Taras Didych. He was rescuing people. My condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. Dozens of people have been injured. More than 370 people have already been evacuated, and the evacuation is ongoing. I received reports from Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Vyhivskyi. Those who allowed this to happen must be held accountable for their decisions. Investigators from the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine are conducting a pre-trial investigation, and criminal proceedings have been opened on charges of official negligence. There are regulations in place – ammunition cannot be stored near homes or other residential areas. Appropriate conclusions will certainly be drawn.

There were also strikes on our regions overnight – the Odesa, Dnipro, Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kherson, Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, Donetsk, and Chernihiv regions. More than 260 attack drones were involved, as well as Banderol drones. Kyiv is under virtually nonstop attack from jet-powered drones. Ukraine cannot be left alone in finding solutions to defend against such strikes, and I thank everyone who is helping with additional support packages and sanctions steps against Russia.
