Listen, if you are applying for competitive PhD funding, make sure you do the following. Please bookmark this:

1. Your topic should be multidisciplinary and contemporary, for example, combining areas such as gender, AI, climate change, sustainability, wellbeing, and so on.

2. Get a supervisor and agree on the project before you apply. If a supervisor in the department agrees to your topic, it increases your chances of of success by over 40%.

3. Think beyond traditional methodologies such as interviews and cross-sectional surveys. Consider fresher approaches like diary entries, computational methods such as Structural Topic Modelling, observations, and so on.

4. Focus heavily on theoretical contributions. Top professors do not want replication. Simply saying that a study has been done in Singapore but not in Kenya is not enough. Geography is NOT novelty.

5. If possible, design a series of studies within one project, for example, Study 1, Study 2, and Study 3. Start with exploratory study, confirmatory study, to explanatory study.

6. Your personal statement and reference letters must not be generic. Forget statements like, “Dennis is hardworking, diligent, and dedicated.” Think along these lines: “While working on a project studying the implications of informal relationships within the workplace, Dennis used an innovative methodology, Structural Topic Modelling, to analyse a large set of social media data. This helped us to…”

7. Get a mentor and keep applying.
