For a popular Muslim Sheikh to confidently tell Christians in Nigeria, in the presence of state governors and other highly respected northern figures, that the Muslim-Muslim ticket was meant to prove to Christians that Muslims “own Nigeria” and that they should leave if they don’t like it is beyond disturbing.

Now imagine the kind of message being preached to Muslims in the North about Christians, polytheists, atheists, and non-Muslims generally.

This is how religious extremism becomes normalized. Islamic extremism has eaten far too deeply into our national consciousness, and anyone still pretending otherwise is deliberately looking away.
