Last night, I attended Nate’s farewell to federal politics.
@NateForOntario can really fill a room. His speech was a reminder of his talent, and of why he is so loved in Beaches–East York.
I first met Nate a few years ago, over coffee before the last leadership race. I wanted to talk housing. As an advocate, I was willing to speak with anyone who would take the issue seriously.
That conversation stuck with me.
Nate understood the housing crisis, and its stakes for society, better than almost anyone I had spoken with in politics. He had clearly read, listened, thought about the issue, and approached it with real curiosity.
That mattered to me, because too often politicians speak about housing problems without having truly spent time understanding them, even as it became one of the defining issues facing the country.
Nate was different. On housing, as on so many issues, he grounded his opinions in facts and then his values.
I respect that a lot.
Nate often chose to be authentic, even when it worked against him politically. That is hard to do, and it says something real about his character. Even when we disagreed, I knew it was sincere.
It is why I was so excited when he was appointed housing minister.
A lot of ink has been spilled over the nomination and leadership race. But big picture, I think our party would have benefited from his talent in it.
Thank you for your service, Nate. I hope there is more to come in the future!
Also, always lovely to see @marymargaretbey ☺️
#BREAKING: In a big boost for Nate Erskine-Smith, Prime Minister Mark Carney sends support in a new video - "It hurts in some respects you're going, but I understand it, bc you're going to be more on the ground - working at the provincial level... I hope, in Scarborough.” #onpoli
the @OntLiberal Party is one of the most insider-driven political parties Canada. if we’re smart enough to elect Nate we need to clean house and radically change the structure of the party
Nate Erskine Smith’s continued presence in the Liberal caucus - among many free votes MPs have exercised on different bills - for over a decade is in direct contradiction to this academic perspective

Today, we remember the fourteen women whose lives were taken at École Polytechnique de Montréal simply because they were women. A solemn reminder of the continued work needed to end gender-based violence and misogyny.
We must never forget their names.
Flight attendants should be paid for their entire shift.
But today the Liberal government imposed back to work legislation on a mostly female workforce who are literally forcedto work for free for a part of every single shift.

Good men don't need to film consent videos as a backup plan.
And even awful men don't use minor league hockey fees to defend rapists year after year.
