The network news anchors are finding it highly amusing because Ari Melber’s reporting revealed that Netflix vastly overpaid for the rights to this footage, destroying the platform’s usual profit margins for standard true-crime documentaries. Pundits are laughing at the executive-level miscalculation. Netflix dropped a record-breaking budget to secure a historical true-crime exclusive, only for it to be completely overshadowed and “bombed” by the global phenomenon of the theatrical biopic. The hidden financial reality that explains the media’s mockery comes down to several key factors.
The Shocking Acquisition Cost:
When analyzing true-crime documentaries, the term “inexpensive” usually applies because they rely on public records and cheap talking-head interviews. However, Ari Melber broke the news that Netflix paid an unprecedented premium to outbid rival networks for the exclusive, unedited 2005 courtroom archives. For a project running under three hours, its cost-per-minute is officially the highest for any documentary in Netflix’s history, meaning it required a massive, Stranger Things-sized audience hit to truly justify the investment.
Failing to Match the Premium Investment:
Because Netflix spent tier-1 scripted Hollywood money on The Verdict, executives were internally budgeting for a massive, multi-week pop culture phenomenon. While 17.8 million views is excellent for a standard documentary, it represents a financial underperformance relative to the staggering price tag reported by Melber. The numbers are a win on paper, but a disappointment on the company balance sheet.
Getting Outclassed by the Biopic:
The morning show chuckles are fueled by how completely Netflix got beaten at its own game. Consider the massive contrast. The biopic was made on a $155 million budget, yet the theatrical movie is crossing $900 million globally with a 97% audience approval rating. Despite its record-breaking cost, the docuseries has only a 7% audience rating, leaving Netflix holding a highly toxic asset that the public is actively rejecting.
The Short Shelf-Life of “Hate-Watching”:
The ultimate joke inside the entertainment industry is the lack of rewatchability. When Netflix pours a record budget into a project, they expect it to draw new subscribers for years. Because The Verdict is heavily review-bombed and painful to watch, it will likely vanish from the public eye once the current media cycle passes. Netflix paid top dollar for long-term cultural capital but only walked away with a brief, volatile burst of internet outrage.

You have to be VERY innocent and NOT guilty to have your lawyer who defended your case 20 years ago to go on live television to speak in your defense with no obligation, no payment, and nothing to gain personally.
@Loki120682 We can take this to DM and I can give you a long list of things that I think are horrific about Trump. But don’t pearl clutch and moralize to me about rhetoric. The president himself posts the most incendiary things ever. There’s no leg to stand on there

With this IP, the fanbase takes everything "way-too seriously", and is not huge. So when you lose them, the film has $$ problems. This is the 3rd and 4th Thor films all over again. But without a Marvel Films fanbase, that if you lose the hard-core fans, there are still people willing to pay to see the film. To keep the film gross at a just less then expected number.
Off-topic, but you are the only person that knows the truth and will not "white-wash" their answer. I will add @questlove also. If older voters (who tend to favor certain rock-era narratives) are the ones most likely to be inconvenienced by the digital format, it could unintentionally make the voter pool even less representative of the full spectrum of rock & roll's history, including the 50s/60s/70s/80s R&B, funk, disco, and Black music acts

Absolute Batman & Mainline Batman will have to solve the same problem seperately next year for FCBD 2027!
“Me and Scott Snyder, we talked about the Batman stuff for Free Comic Book Day, we’re gonna do a thing where I’m writing a thing, and he’s writing a thing, and it’s kind of the same hook done two different ways. We’ll see how Absolute Batman solves it and Batman solves it,”
