As an EU country, the Netherlands is required to protect meadow birds and their habitats under the Birds Directive. But it has been failing to meet these international obligations for years. The European Commission’s decision to take legal action sends a strong message.

@vogelnieuws, our Dutch Partner, sees this as a crucial wake-up call for the government. The organization has been calling for action to reverse the drastic decline of meadow birds for years.

“Let's not forget that meadow birds need farmers. Many farmers already dedicate themselves to this cause daily, but the government must offer more to support them properly and further increase the number of bird-friendly farmers," said Karsten Schipperheijn, Director of Vogelbescherming Nederland. “Something must be done immediately before we lose our meadow birds forever.”
