BREAKING: DHS chief threatens to CANCEL international flight processing to punish sanctuary cities for protesting ICE
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin just threatened to hold American airports hostage because people are protesting outside an immigration detention facility in New Jersey.
Mullin told Fox News Tuesday that the Trump administration is "currently drawing up plans" to stop processing international flights at airports in so-called sanctuary cities โ cities where local police don't cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. The threat came directly in response to protests outside the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, where detained immigrants have been on a hunger and work strike for five days, demanding basic medical care and improved conditions.
Let's be clear about what Mullin is actually proposing. Customs and Border Protection and the TSA โ both part of his own department โ process international arrivals at airports like Newark Liberty. Mullin is threatening to withdraw those federal services from major American airports, disrupting international travel for millions of passengers, businesses, and airlines โ to punish cities where Democrats are showing up to protest detention conditions.
This would be collective punishment of entire cities and their economies for the political speech of their elected officials.
A sitting United States Senator, Andy Kim (D-NJ) was pepper-sprayed by ICE officers at the protest on Monday. Mullin accused Kim and other Democratic lawmakers of "spreading smears" and "political stunts."
Meanwhile, Congressman Adriano Espaillat was allowed inside the Delaney Hall facility on Wednesday for an oversight visit. His assessment: "The food conditions are horrible. They're not getting medical services. They're overcrowded, and they're denied their fundamental rights."
That's not a smear. That's a congressional oversight finding.
Mullin framed his threat as a question of fairness: why should the federal government process flights into cities that limit cooperation with ICE? But sanctuary policies don't prevent ICE from operating โ they simply limit some collaboration between local police and federal immigration agents. That's not obstruction. That's federalism.
What Mullin is describing โ using airport services as a political weapon against cities whose residents and lawmakers disagree with administration policy โ is an abuse of power so brazen it would be hard to believe if he hadn't said it on Fox News himself.
People are protesting because a senator got pepper-sprayed and detainees are going hungry. Mullin's response is to threaten your flight home.
Itโs the kind of typical bullying response thatโs become par for the course in everything the Trump administration does. We canโt let it become normalized.
