Researchers in Japan are working on a treatment that could one day help people naturally regrow lost teeth, with early human studies already being conducted and hopes that it may become available later in the decade.

The approach focuses on a biological signal linked to tooth development, particularly a protein called USAG 1. This protein normally acts as a brake on tooth formation during growth. Scientists believe that by blocking its activity, it may be possible to reactivate inactive tooth forming cells that remain in the jaw after early development.

Most people develop two natural sets of teeth in their lifetime, primary and permanent. However, research suggests that small remnants of developmental tissue related to a possible additional set of teeth may still exist in some individuals, even though they usually do not progress further.

In animal studies, suppressing the USAG 1 pathway has led to the growth of extra teeth in species such as mice, and similar effects have been observed in other mammals. These findings have encouraged researchers to explore whether the same biological mechanism can be safely activated in humans.

Current clinical work is primarily aimed at people born with missing permanent teeth due to genetic conditions. This affects a small percentage of the population and can lead to long term dental and functional challenges. Existing treatments such as implants or dentures replace teeth but do not restore natural growth.

If the treatment continues to show positive safety and effectiveness results, scientists hope it could eventually be used more broadly for tooth loss caused by injury, decay, or ageing. This would represent a shift in dentistry from replacement based solutions toward true biological regeneration.

The research is still in early stages, and while there is optimism about future applications, any real world use will depend on successful clinical trials and regulatory approval.
