If you’re trying to improve your next videos, don’t just focus on impressions and views.

Impressions tell you how many people YouTube showed your video to. Views tell you how many people clicked. That’s useful, but it doesn’t tell you why the video performed the way it did.

Your analytics go much deeper than that.

Look at your CTR to see if your thumbnail and title are doing their job. Check your AVD and audience retention to find out where people are losing interest. Look at your traffic sources to see where your viewers are coming from. Check your engagement and returning viewers to know if people actually enjoyed the content enough to come back.

A lot of people hear analytics and immediately think impressions and views. In reality, those are just the starting point. If you want your next video to perform better, the rest of your analytics will usually tell you what needs fixing.

If your YouTube audience is mostly between 50–75 years old, don’t rely on small blue text in your thumbnails.

As we get older, our eyes become less sensitive to blue, so thin blue text can be harder to see, especially on mobile.

One thing that helps is designing your thumbnail in black and white first.

Why?

Because a good thumbnail isn’t built on color. It’s built on:
• Contrast
• Readability
• Clear focus
• Simple hierarchy

Once that works, then add color.

For older viewers, red and yellow often stand out better than blue, but contrast is still the most important thing.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Use bold text
• Increase contrast
• Keep the layout simple
• Don’t try to fit too much into one thumbnail

If people can’t understand your thumbnail in a second or two, they’ll probably keep scrolling.
